As we are witnessing build up of World Cup is drawing closer and closer, one more thing which can give us nothing more than a scoff and that is the assurances syndrome hit to the coaches all round the world. Teams who are doing well do not have to speak too many things because their exhibitions are enough to do that profusely such as India, New Zealand, South Africa or England. But real claims to take fight to the oppositions come from camps that have been exposed naked prior to the big competition.
Coach who needs all of this self-reassurances is Bob Woolmer whose team is in dire straits after deplorable South Africa Tour where they were mauled to every part of the ground mercilessly. Bowling looks awry, openers are in perennial slumber and doping issue is all set to scathe enormously once again, so all you can amass as a coach is few pleasant comments about your own team. And, Bob is doing it with diligent proficiency. Facts can swivel all over you like ghouls, but seers such as Bob Woolmer can continue the game of self-deception for Pakistan’s shoddy confidence.
Another coach who joins the party of self-deception is host Mr. Bennett King of West Indies. He gallantly trying to shrug off six losses in last eight encounters and go with the positive attitude in the tournament. Victory is the biggest confidence booster for any fighting unit. West Indies failed to gulp that tonic in last few encounters, so the best thing that they can manage is few inspirational coach-talks or watching Brian Lara’s one of many famous knocks or re-gather thoughts of victory in ICC Champions Trophy few years back. With all the support of home crowd, heroics of key players’ one thing which can hardly make any real difference in their campaign are this sugar-coated stuff from Mr. King.
Last but not the least John Buchanan’s heavy voice in his usual philosophical style can barely cushioned Australians after 5 body blowing defeats consecutively. But coach is still persistent that his unit’s preparations are going in the right direction. May be he finds some novel meaning of right or direction in dictionary. One batting failure, and two disgusting bowling failures at the hands of Kiwis can raise doubts in the hearts of die-hard fans of depletion, but this coach is still trying to get on with the things with one or two minor tunings. Injuries to big names, lack of penetration in bowling line-up, but Buchanan is carrying on his merry way that they are still capable of beating anyone anywhere in the world. I hope his tenure’s end as an Australian coach will justify his statements eventually.
It is good to see the positive attitude of all coaches, but what is bad to watch is the game of self-deception. They are doing it either to justify their preparations as a team or their own roles as heads of international units. Whatever they are looking for by employing these obscure tactics is unfathomable. But what they are really achieving is raising stakes for their own teams, and nothing more than that.
